My teaching philosophy reflects my core values and my strong belief that education is the foundation of human advancement. I aim to create a learning environment that aligns with my values of critical thinking and respect for the inherent value and potential of each person. As a teacher, I aim to integrate a scientific approach based on evidence-based techniques and innovation with a humanistic approach based on human connection and a genuine interest in each of my students.
I believe that critical thinking and unbiased inquiry are essential foundations for education and for advancing human health. In an era of rapidly evolving scientific knowledge and increasing access to information, the value of education comes not from memorization of facts, but from the ability to make meaningful connections and apply concepts. I encourage students to approach information with curiosity, evaluate evidence critically, and remain open to new perspectives. Based on my background in pharmacology and pharmacy practice, I am passionate about helping students bridge foundational sciences with clinical relevance, enabling them to think critically about patient care and solve new and unexpected problems. My approach involves breaking down complex topics into manageable components and guiding students in applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Therefore, I incorporate active learning strategies that promote critical thinking, and I assess my students on their ability to synthesize and apply key concepts. I want my students to feel challenged yet supported while developing the critical thinking skills necessary to engage in problem-solving and lifelong learning throughout their careers.
I believe that each of my students has immense value and potential. I recognize that each student brings a valuable perspective to the classroom based on their own unique experiences. I believe that diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints strengthens the learning environment by providing alternative perspectives and allowing more thoughtful engagement with complex problems. I am committed to fostering an environment where all students feel supported. I believe transparency is important in establishing trust and promoting student success, so I aim to clearly communicate expectations, learning objectives, grading practices, and feedback so that students understand not only what they are learning, but also why it matters and how they can continue to grow. I strive to know each of my students as individuals including their goals, motivations, and challenges. I recognize the immense potential within my students, and it is incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact that my students have through their careers.
I believe in balancing evidence-based teaching strategies with innovation to advance pharmacy education. Drawing from both educational research and my background in neuronal plasticity and memory, I aim to incorporate strategies known to strengthen long-term retention and understanding, including retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and active learning. I aim to design learning experiences that require students to apply, synthesize, and evaluate information. At the same time, I recognize that innovation is needed to prepare students for an evolving healthcare environment. Therefore, I seek new approaches, technologies, and instructional methods that enhance engagement, accessibility, and student success while remaining grounded in educational evidence.
Finally, I believe in the power of human connection in education. Meaningful learning occurs when students feel supported, encouraged, and connected to their instructors and peers. I view teaching not simply as the transmission of knowledge, but as a collaborative process built on trust, mentorship, and shared purpose. I aim to be approachable, accessible, and encouraging when my students experience challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. I view my students as my future colleagues, and it brings me immense joy to help shape their educational and professional journeys.
