Tips for Your College Visit
9 Tips for Making the Most of Your Pharmacy School Visit
Visiting colleges is an important step in your graduate school journey. It can feel exciting and even a little overwhelming, especially if you’re balancing classes, research, or work at the same time. Whether you’re visiting Mercer or another program, these tips will help you get the most out of your campus experience.
1. Reserve your spot early.
Graduate-level programs often have smaller tour groups and specialized sessions, so availability can fill up quickly. Reserve your spot by completing this form.
2. Keep an eye on your email.
After you register, you’ll receive confirmation details: where to park, when to arrive, and what to expect. We will also send you information about faculty you’ll meet or labs you’ll tour. Staying on top of these emails helps you arrive prepared.
3. Plan for the weather.
Comfort matters more than anything else. Check the forecast before your visit, and pack a jacket or umbrella if needed. At Mercer, we keep ponchos, umbrellas, and plenty of water on hand for guests. (Note: in the event of severe weather, walking tours may be rescheduled for safety.)
4. Dress smart but comfortable.
Your admission isn’t based on your outfit, but you’ll likely be walking through labs, classrooms, and campus pathways. Comfortable shoes are a must. Aim for business casual so you feel both comfortable and confident.
5. Prepare thoughtful questions.
This is your chance to connect with admissions counselors, faculty, and current students. For pharmacy school, consider asking:
- What types of research or clinical opportunities are available to graduate students?
- How accessible are faculty mentors outside of class?
- What are typical career paths for recent graduates?
- How does the program support residency or fellowship placement?
6. Observe campus culture.
Could you picture yourself thriving here for the next four years? Watch how students interact, what’s posted on bulletin boards, and the overall feel of the program. Graduate students often value things like study spaces, lab facilities, and how collaborative the environment feels.
7. Take notes and photos.
With multiple schools on your list, details can blur together. Use your phone (or a notebook) to jot down impressions, snap photos of key spaces, and write questions that come up during your visit.
8. Explore the surrounding city.
Where you live during pharmacy school matters just as much as the program itself. Atlanta is the cultural hub of the South, and you could spend a week exploring our city! We’ve compiled a list of places to get you started. offers great restaurants, coffee shops, outdoor activities, and a vibrant music scene—perfect outlets when you need balance outside of class and labs.
9. Stay connected with your admissions counselor.
Your admissions counselor is your guide through the process. They can connect you with faculty, help you understand prerequisites, and even link you with current students or alumni. Don’t hesitate to follow up with questions after your visit! That’s what they’re here for.
