Meet Dr. Jenna Bloemer

Dr. Jenna Bloemer is the newest member of the Mercer College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In her role as Assistant Professor, she will be in the classroom and conducting important research.
What is your role here at Mercer?
I’m an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Mercer. My background is in pharmacy practice and pharmacology research. I’ll be teaching classes, spending a lot of time with students, and conducting research.
What’s your background?
I’m from Alabama, and I went to Auburn University, where I earned both my PharmD and a PhD in pharmacology. After that, I spent some time at Touro College of Pharmacy in New York, then at Larkin University in Miami. Now, I’m excited to be at Mercer.
What are some of your areas of expertise?
My research background is in neuropharmacology. I’m particularly interested in psychological and neurological disorders, and the memory dysfunction associated with them. My research focuses on synaptic dysfunction and its contribution to memory impairment and diseases such as Alzheimer’s. I also explore how this knowledge can be used to develop and test novel therapeutics for treating such conditions.
Why did you choose to come to Mercer?
I’ve been familiar with Mercer for a while, and the more I looked into it, the more I saw a strong culture of excellence in both teaching and research. I was impressed by the campus and the people here, and I felt it would be a great place to be.
What excites you the most in the upcoming semester?
I’m most excited to meet the students and interact with them in the classroom. I want to get to know them—their goals, their inspirations—and be part of their journey.
What’s something people don’t know about you?
I used to play rugby at Auburn University. It was a lot of fun, but I didn’t stick with it!
Where’s your favorite place to go in Atlanta?
We just moved here, but one of the first places we visited was Stone Mountain. My family and I enjoyed walking around and taking in the views. I think it’s a spot we’ll keep going back to.
