Does Pharmacy School Require the PCAT?
QUESTION: Does pharmacy school require MCAT / PCAT?
So, you’re aiming for a career in pharmacy – a fantastic choice! But navigating the admissions requirements can feel like deciphering hieroglyphics, especially regarding standardized tests. Do you need the MCAT or the PCAT? Let’s shed some light:
MCAT vs. PCAT:
- MCAT (Medical College Admission Test): Designed for aspiring medical doctors (MD), the MCAT assesses knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and critical thinking skills.
- PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test): Tailored specifically for pharmacy school hopefuls, the PCAT focused on math, verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, science (biology, chemistry), and writing skills.
Which One Do You Need?
We’ll make it easy for you: Neither. For years, taking the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) was optional for admission to Mercer. As of January 10, 2024, the PCAT was officially retired. The MCAT was never required for admission.

More About the PCAT
The PCAT exam was a standardized test, much like the SAT or MCAT. It was a 192 multiple choice question exam with one writing prompt. Test takers were allowed 3 hours and 40 minutes, incliding a 15 minute rest break. The test was split up into multiple choice subtests, including Biological and Chemical Processes, Critical Reasoning, and Quantative Reasoning. PCAT testing official score reports ranged between 200-600; and potential pharmacy schools were able to see those official transcripts and the percentile ranks for each student. Testing dates varied, usually starting in July and continuing through March. The first official PCAT was administered in 1974. It was officially cancelled in 2024.
